Meeting project deadlines
Hi everyone!
The course is getting up to the speed and I feel like I have been learning a lot of new things, listening to interesting podcasts and really enjoying reading some of your blog posts.
At work it has been also a roller coaster of ups and downs. As for me the IT world is very new I'm happy to learn new things about project management and project planning.
One topic that crossed my mind recently was how do teams in IT deal with project delays? How do they keep the team motivated? What are the pitfalls of a delayed project? And of course, how to handle it?
I was reading around on this topic and here I will summarize what are the key factors for managing deadlines:
-Evaluation of the requirements One of the most important factors on being productive is having a structured workflow. Evaluating requirements and estimating the time that similar tasks took in the past makes it easier to set realistic deadline for the project.
-Getting the resources the team needs
Sometimes the team managers or product owners rely on the team completing the project requirements without evaluating if the team has all resources they need. This goes from systems and programs to actual professionals and field experts.
-Planning
Without a doubt project success greatly depends on the project planning. Agile tools such as scrum or Kanban can help breaking tasks down into smaller components and creating specific deadlines for each of them. Also visualizing the roadmap of the project can help the team to know when and what needs to be completed.
-Limit the Damage of a Missed Deadline
Even with a hard work, it happens that projects go over the deadline. The most important then is to make an effort in limiting the damage that it can cause. Especially, keeping the stakeholders and product owners informed and bringing up the issues that caused the delay.
These actions take a broad perspective of the project, however, we must also take care and manage ourselves. Knowing the difference between planning and doing, knowing your limitations and your possibilities, making good use of the time and being assertive are skills that can make one a great team player and someone who is a great motivator for the team. Only great teams make the project truly great, so I believe apart from managing oneself, team effort is the key for successful projects that meet deadlines.
